AI upscaling
Also known as: super resolution, AI super-resolution, video upscaling
Using a trained model to enlarge video to a higher resolution, such as 1080p to 4K, by predicting plausible detail instead of just stretching pixels.

What it means
Classic upscaling stretches each frame and smooths the result, so a 1080p clip enlarged to 4K simply looks soft. AI upscaling, also called super resolution, uses a neural network trained on pairs of low- and high-resolution images. It predicts the fine detail that would probably be there, such as edges, textures and hair, and paints it in.
The output can look much sharper than ordinary scaling, but the detail is invented, not recovered. That makes AI upscaling great for old clips and small sensors, and risky when exact detail matters. It sits alongside other generative tools such as frame interpolation in modern editors.
How it works in practice
Typical uses are mixing older 1080p footage into a 4K timeline, rescuing a heavily cropped shot after a punch-in, or cleaning up archive clips from an early action camera. Tools such as Topaz Video AI and the super-scale options in DaVinci Resolve do this, usually slowly, since every frame goes through a large model.
Upscale from the best source you have. The original camera file holds far more real detail than a copy downloaded from a social platform, and the model works better with real detail to build on.
Denoise before or during upscaling, never after, so noise is not enlarged and sharpened into fake texture.
What to watch out for
Upscaled faces and text can drift into strange shapes, and water, foliage and snow sometimes turn into waxy patterns that flicker between frames. Watch the result at full size on a big screen before trusting it.
Heavy compression artifacts get upscaled too. Blocky edges become sharper blocks, which can look worse than the soft original. Clean the source first or accept a smaller enlargement, such as 1.5 times instead of double.
Finally, upscaling does not replace shooting at the resolution you need. If a 4K delivery matters, record in 4K or higher so the detail is real and no model has to guess it.
How RawClip handles it
RawClip does not upscale footage: it edits what you upload and delivers the highlight in 4K and 1080p MP4. For the sharpest 4K result, upload original camera files at 4K or 5.3K rather than lower-resolution copies.
