AutoBoost

Also known as: HyperSmooth AutoBoost, GoPro AutoBoost

A GoPro stabilization setting that adds crop only when the ride gets rough, keeping a wider frame on smooth sections and steadier footage on bumpy ones.

Updated

What it means

AutoBoost is one of the levels of HyperSmooth on recent GoPro cameras. Instead of applying a fixed amount of stabilization, the camera watches how much it is shaking and decides frame by frame how far it needs to crop into the sensor to keep the picture steady.

On a smooth road or a calm paddle the crop stays small, so you keep most of the field of view. When you hit roots, chatter or a rough landing, the camera zooms in slightly to gain room for correction. The idea is to get the widest image the conditions allow without you having to pick a mode in advance.

How it works in practice

Riders often choose AutoBoost for mixed terrain such as a mountain bike descent that alternates between flowing singletrack and rock gardens, or a motorcycle ride that moves from tarmac to gravel. It is less useful on a tripod or a gentle walk, where the plain On setting already gives a stable, wide frame.

Because the crop changes during the clip, the apparent zoom can drift slightly over time. Most viewers never notice, but if you plan to cut between two cameras or overlay graphics at fixed positions, a constant setting gives more predictable framing in the edit and makes matching shots easier.

What to watch out for

AutoBoost cannot add light. In shade or at dusk the camera still lengthens its shutter speed, and the stabilized frame shows motion blur that wobbles slightly as the crop shifts. Keep it for daylight, or accept a narrower but more consistent fixed setting in dim forest.

Some resolutions, frame rates and lens modes limit which stabilization levels are available, so the option may disappear when you pick a high frame rate. Check the setting after changing modes instead of assuming the camera kept your choice from the last session. A quick look at the status screen before you drop in avoids a whole run filmed in the wrong mode.

How RawClip handles it

RawClip works with the stabilized files exactly as the camera wrote them. Turn AutoBoost or any other HyperSmooth level on before you ride, upload the clips, and the AI cuts the steadiest, most exciting moments into one highlight.
