Chest mount

Also known as: chest harness, chest strap mount, Chesty

A harness that straps an action camera to the rider's chest for a lower, steadier POV showing hands, handlebars or skis along with the terrain ahead.

What it means

A chest mount is an elastic harness worn over a jacket or jersey with a camera clip in the middle of the chest. Because your torso moves less than your head, the shot is steadier than a helmet view and does not swing away every time you look around.

The lower position also changes what viewers see. Arms, handlebars, a pole plant or the nose of a snowboard appear in the frame, which gives the POV a sense of body and speed. Mountain bikers like it because the bars dip into corners and the trail looks steeper than it does from a helmet mount.

How it works in practice

Most harnesses let you clip the camera upright or upside down. Upside down is common because it gives a better pivot for angling the lens, and the camera flips the image automatically or via an orientation setting. On a bike, tilt the lens up more than feels natural: you lean forward while riding, and the camera ends up staring at the top tube.

A chest mount suits slower technical riding, tree skiing, and kids or passengers who will not wear a helmet camera. Shoot wide at 4K and 50 or 60 fps, and leave electronic stabilization on, since breathing and pedaling still add a gentle rhythmic sway.

What to watch out for

The classic mistake is an hour of your own jacket or front tire. Check framing with a short test clip in riding position, not while standing upright. Over a thick winter jacket the strap tension and angle change, so readjust whenever you add or remove layers.

Audio is the other weak point. The microphone sits right under your chin, so heavy breathing, fabric rustle and wind dominate the sound; plan to lay licensed music over it in the edit. And in a forward crash the camera is between you and the ground, so many riders switch to a handlebar mount or helmet for fast, rocky runs.

How RawClip handles it

Chest footage drops straight into a RawClip order alongside helmet, handlebar or drone clips. The AI does not need clean audio, because the finished cut follows the beat of included music, and it keeps the fast sections where bars and terrain sell the speed in your highlight.
