Hybrid zoom

Also known as: drone zoom, tele camera, optical plus digital zoom

Zoom on drones that combines a telephoto lens with digital cropping, letting you film distant subjects or compress perspective without flying closer.

Updated

What it means

Some drones carry more than one camera: a wide main camera and one or two telephoto cameras. Hybrid zoom switches between them and adds digital zoom in between, so the pilot can move smoothly from a wide view to a tight shot. Single-camera drones use digital zoom only, cropping the sensor.

Telephoto shots from the air look very different from wide drone footage. Distance compresses the scene, making mountains look stacked and subjects stand out against a flattened background. They also let you film wildlife or people without flying close and disturbing them.

Image quality depends heavily on whether the view comes from a real telephoto lens or from cropping.

How it works in practice

Use the telephoto camera for compressed landscapes, distant riders on a ridge, waves at a surf break or details on a building. Slow movement looks especially cinematic at long focal lengths, such as a gentle orbit or tracking shot with the subject large in frame.

Stay within the optical range for the best quality. Digital zoom beyond it quickly softens the image, especially in lower light, and artifacts become obvious.

Fly in calm conditions. At long focal lengths, small vibrations and wind movements are magnified, so stabilization works harder and fine shake becomes visible.

What to watch out for

Telephoto cameras on drones often have smaller sensors and darker apertures than the main camera. In dim light, they become noisy faster.

Heat haze over roads, water and hot ground blurs distant subjects, especially at midday. Morning and evening light gives clearer long shots, and cooler air above water is often steadier than over hot rock.

Zooming during a shot can look amateurish if done fast. Choose a focal length before recording, or zoom very slowly and deliberately. Flying far to use the zoom also tests line of sight rules, so stay within the limits.
