Protune

Also known as: GoPro Protune, GoPro manual controls

GoPro advanced settings menu with manual control over bitrate, color profile, white balance, ISO, shutter, sharpness and audio for a more editable image.

What it means

Protune is the name GoPro uses for its advanced controls. Turning it on, or opening the Protune section in newer models, unlocks settings such as Bitrate, color profile, white balance, ISO minimum and maximum, shutter speed, exposure compensation, sharpness and raw audio options.

It was originally designed for filmmakers who wanted footage that grades well rather than looks punchy out of the camera. Today it is simply where GoPro keeps the settings that a typical user rarely changes but that matter for consistent, professional-looking results.

Other brands offer the same idea under names like Pro mode or manual mode.

How it works in practice

Popular Protune choices for action include high bitrate for busy scenes, a natural or flat color profile, low sharpness to avoid an over-processed look, and a capped ISO maximum to limit noise in shade. Newer models also offer a log profile for serious grading.

White balance set to a fixed value rather than auto keeps colors steady between clips. For snow, sunny beaches and forests, fixed settings prevent color shifts as the camera moves in and out of light.

Save your Protune settings as a preset so you can switch between your normal, low-light and slow-motion setups quickly.

What to watch out for

Protune footage with flat color and low sharpness looks soft and dull until it is graded. If you share clips straight from the camera, the standard settings may look better.

Capping ISO too low in dim light makes the camera underexpose, and the footage turns dark and noisy when brightened. Leave some ISO headroom for shaded trails.

High bitrate settings fill cards faster and need fast memory cards. Check that your card is rated for the mode, or the camera may stop recording in the middle of your best run. A test recording at the new setting before a trip catches this early.

How RawClip handles it

RawClip uses Protune clips as recorded and does not grade them. If you used a flat or log profile, convert the footage to a normal look before upload, and the AI cuts it into your highlight.
