Smart trimming
Also known as: auto trim, intelligent trimming, automatic cut points
Automatically choosing where a clip should start and end, cutting away setup and dead time so only the meaningful action remains.

What it means
A typical action clip contains a few seconds of real action surrounded by waiting, walking, paddling or riding back up. Smart trimming finds the meaningful section and sets the in and out points automatically, so the result starts just before the action and ends shortly after it.
It combines several signals: changes in motion, the start and peak of an action, audio events, scene changes and faces. Good smart trimming also leaves a short lead-in, so viewers understand what is about to happen, instead of cutting straight into the peak.
It is one of the most time-saving parts of AI video editing, since trimming by hand is slow.
How it works in practice
For the best results, start recording a little before the action and stop a little after. The software has context to work with, and you never cut off the beginning of a jump or a wave.
Long continuous recordings are fine too. Smart trimming can split a long ride into separate moments, keeping the best sections and dropping dead time in between.
If you edit manually afterwards, use smart trimming as a first pass, then fine-tune cut points to the music. Trims that land on a beat feel deliberate, while trims that land mid-phrase feel accidental, even when the footage is identical.
What to watch out for
Automatic trims can cut too tightly, removing the approach that gives a jump its meaning, or too loosely, keeping slow seconds. Review important moments, and keep roughly a second of lead-in before every takeoff so the viewer understands the speed.
Trimming depends on recognizing action. Subtle moments, such as a calm view or a quiet smile, may be cut or shortened even though they add value to the story.
When clips are chaptered or split by the camera, trims that work across file boundaries need all the pieces. Upload every chapter of a recording, as explained under chaptered video files.
How RawClip handles it
RawClip trims your clips automatically: the AI keeps the action, removes dull and duplicate parts, and cuts the remaining moments to the beat of the music for one highlight at the length you choose.
