Tripod

Also known as: mini tripod, camera tripod, travel tripod

A three-legged stand that holds a camera steady. For action cameras, small tripods give static angles, time-lapses and fixed views of training sessions.

What it means

A tripod keeps the camera completely still, which matters for shots where you are the subject, time-lapses, interviews and filming a session from a fixed angle. Full-size tripods suit drones on the ground and mirrorless cameras, while mini tripods and flexible-leg models suit action cameras and phones.

Action cameras connect through a 1/4-inch thread adapter or a mount with fingers. Many selfie sticks and grips also fold out into a small tripod, which makes them useful two-in-one tools for travel.

A stable base is the foundation of any fixed-camera recording, from sparring to skateparks.

How it works in practice

For sports filming, set the tripod at the side of a jump, a ring or a surf break and leave the camera running. Height matters: a low tripod makes jumps look bigger, while eye level gives a natural view. Weigh down light tripods with a bag in wind.

For time-lapses and night lapses, a solid tripod is essential, since any movement over a long sequence shows up as jitter. Lock every joint and avoid touching the camera once recording starts.

In combat sports and gyms, a tall tripod in the corner gives a wide view of sparring or training that captures the whole space.

What to watch out for

Small tripods tip over easily, especially with a heavy accessory or on uneven ground. Spread the legs fully, use a hook or weight, and keep it out of walkways.

Leaving a camera on a tripod in direct sun for long recordings can cause overheating. Shade it or record in chunks.

A tripod in a public place can attract attention or be knocked over. Keep an eye on it, and do not leave expensive gear unattended at crowded beaches or trailheads. A cheap lock or simply staying within sight saves a lot of trouble, and some venues and parks have rules about tripods that are worth checking before you set up.
