5.7K

Also known as: 5.7K 360, sphere resolution

The resolution 360 cameras record their full sphere at, which becomes a much smaller frame once a flat shot is extracted from it.

What it means

5.7K describes the sphere rather than the output. A 360 camera spreads that resolution across everything around it, so any single direction gets a fraction of it. The number is spread thin across every direction at once.

What comes out of a reframe is roughly 1080p. Pulling a normal field of view from the sphere leaves far less detail than the headline number suggests at first.

That is why the figure keeps rising. 8K video on a 360 body exists to make the extracted flat shot sharp rather than to deliver 8K to anybody actually watching the result.

How it works in practice

It is judged by what the reframe delivers. Comparing a 5.7K sphere to a 4K flat camera means comparing the extracted shot, not the specification on the box.

360 reframing is where the resolution gets spent. A wide extraction keeps more pixels than a tight one, so punching in spends detail directly and there is less of it than the number implies.

Storage and card demands are real. A sphere at this resolution needs a fast card and produces an INSV file much larger than a flat clip of the same length manages to produce.

What to watch out for

The headline figure is misleading by design. Nothing in a 360 workflow delivers 5.7K to a viewer, and comparing it to a flat camera resolution is comparing two different things entirely.

Stitching eats some of it. The seam area where two lenses meet is measurably softer, and a reframe through a Stitch line looks worse than the same shot elsewhere in the same sphere.

Processing is heavy. Converting a sphere to a flat clip is a Transcoding step before any editing can start at all, which turns a quick session into a long evening.

How RawClip handles it

Spherical footage is reframed into flat shots before the sequence is assembled, which is where the real resolution of a clip is decided. A higher sphere resolution gives that step more to work with, so the extracted shots hold up better on a large screen.
