Close-up shot

Also known as: close-up, CU, detail shot

A tight shot of a face, hands or object that shows detail and emotion. In action edits, close-ups give rhythm and break up long wide POV clips.

What it means

A close-up fills the frame with a single subject: a face, a hand gripping a bar, a ski boot clicking in, a wheel spinning, a wave lip. It shows detail and emotion that wide shots cannot, and it helps the viewer connect with the person behind the action.

In shot grammar, close-ups sit at the tight end of a scale that runs from extreme wide through wide and medium to close-up and extreme close-up. Mixing these sizes keeps an edit visually interesting, and a close-up is often what makes a highlight feel personal.

For action creators, close-ups are often the missing ingredient that turns a series of POV clips into a story.

How it works in practice

Film close-ups before and after the action: gearing up, a nervous breath at the top, a smile at the bottom, mud on the face. A phone, a pocket gimbal or a camera with autofocus handles these better than a fixed-focus action camera, which cannot focus very close.

In the edit, use close-ups as insert shots and transitions between wide action clips. Cutting from a close-up of a hand on a brake lever to the POV of a fast corner builds tension.

Short is good: one or two seconds per close-up keeps the pace up and the story moving.

What to watch out for

Action camera wide lenses distort faces at close range, making noses look big and features stretched. Step back a little or use a narrower lens mode for faces.

Close-ups shot in harsh midday sun often have deep shadows under eyes and helmets. Open shade or golden hour light is more flattering.

Too many close-ups make an edit feel claustrophobic. Balance them with wide and establishing shots, so viewers still understand where the action happens. A simple pattern of wide, medium and close-up for each location gives any edit a natural flow.
