Insert shot

Also known as: insert, detail insert, cut-in

A close shot of a detail within the main scene, such as hands on brakes or a boot clicking into a binding, inserted to show what matters.

What it means

An insert shot shows a specific detail of the action happening in the main shot. Where a cutaway shows something else, an insert zooms into the same scene: the watch at the start line, fingers adjusting a drone controller, a carabiner clipping in, a hand dropping into the water at the start of a paddle.

Inserts direct attention and add texture. They tell viewers what is important, build anticipation before a big moment, and make edits feel professionally crafted rather than a string of wide shots. They are usually filmed separately, often with a phone or a camera that can focus close.

Many inserts are close-ups, but not every close-up is an insert.

How it works in practice

Plan a few inserts for each scene: gearing up, the moment before dropping in, the reaction after. Film them before or after the main action, since you cannot film details while riding.

In the edit, an insert of one to two seconds between a wide shot and the action builds tension. A sequence of quick inserts, such as boots, buckles, goggles and a deep breath, is a classic way to start an action edit.

Use a camera with autofocus or a phone for close details, since fixed-focus action cameras cannot focus very near.

What to watch out for

Inserts that do not match the main scene, such as different gloves or a different light, break continuity. Film them in the same session and conditions, ideally right before or after the main take.

Too many inserts slow down the action. Use them at moments of anticipation, not in the middle of a fast run.

Soft or shaky close-ups look worse than no inserts at all. Take a few seconds to frame and steady each one, since a clean detail shot adds a lot of quality to an edit, especially in the opening sequence.

How RawClip handles it
