Engine sound

Also known as: motor noise, exhaust note

The mechanical noise a motorised subject makes, which is both the most characteristic sound in moto footage and the hardest to record cleanly.

What it means

Engine sound is the identity of motorsport footage. A rising note communicates speed and effort more directly than any picture of a speedometer, which is why removing it entirely makes the footage feel inert.

It is also brutally hard on a microphone. The sound is loud, low and continuous, which means it sits at the level where a small capsule overloads and produces Audio clipping rather than character.

A drone adds a second and less welcome kind. Propeller noise is a constant whine with no musical interest at all, and it masks everything else the camera might have picked up.

How it works in practice

Distance and mounting do more than any setting. A microphone away from direct airflow and not bolted to a vibrating panel records a note rather than a roar.

Where the engine is the point, recording it separately is the reliable answer. A second device near the exhaust gives a usable track to lay under the picture, synced later by Audio sync.

In the mix it usually sits under music rather than over it. A little engine under a track grounds the footage, while a lot of it fights the arrangement and wins, which is where Audio ducking earns its place.

What to watch out for

Levels set for engine noise leave nothing for anything else. A gain low enough to survive full throttle makes speech and ambience inaudible for the rest of the clip.

Vibration through the mount is a separate problem from the airborne sound. It arrives as a low rumble unrelated to the note, and softer mounting fixes it where filtering cannot.

Filtering aggressively takes the engine with the rumble. A high pass set to remove Wind noise also removes most of what made the exhaust sound like an exhaust, leaving a thin rasp that communicates nothing about speed.

How RawClip handles it

Camera audio including engine noise is kept underneath the music rather than discarded, so moto footage still sounds like moto footage. Where a clip is dominated by overload or by propeller whine with nothing musical in it, the music carries that stretch on its own instead.
