GoPro Quik

Also known as: Quik app, GoPro app, GoPro Quik app

The official GoPro app for controlling the camera, copying footage to your phone and making quick automatic or hands-on edits on the go.

What it means

GoPro Quik is the companion app for GoPro cameras on iOS and Android. It connects to the camera over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, lets you preview the shot and change settings remotely, copies clips to your phone, handles firmware updates, and includes an editor built around themes, music and simple trimming.

Its best-known feature is automatic editing: Quik picks moments from your clips, lays them over a soundtrack with beat-matched cuts and packages a short video ready to share. With a GoPro subscription it can also back up footage to the cloud and suggest automatic highlight edits from the clips you upload.

How it works in practice

For a single day out, a typical workflow is: offload a handful of clips over Wi-Fi, mark favorite moments, let Quik build an edit, then adjust clip order, speed and theme. It also handles reframing of GoPro MAX footage, frame grabs from video and speed effects, and it can use the HiLight tags you pressed while recording as hints.

Quik is at its best for short trips and social clips: it is free to start, quick to learn and tightly tied to the camera, including presets and remote control. It also accepts photos and videos from your phone gallery, so footage from other devices can go into the same edit.

What to watch out for

Wireless transfer is the bottleneck. Moving dozens of chaptered 5.3K files over the camera Wi-Fi takes a long time and fills phone storage fast. For big sessions, copy the card to a computer with a card reader and bring only the selects into the app.

Automatic edits work best on modest amounts of footage. With several hours of raw footage from more than one camera, you will still spend a while picking and ordering clips on a small screen. Keep your originals, too: an exported edit is a new encode for sharing, not a replacement for the files on the card.

How RawClip handles it

RawClip fits alongside Quik rather than replacing it. Keep using Quik to run the camera and share a quick clip on the spot; when a trip leaves you with hours of footage from a GoPro and other cameras, upload the whole set to RawClip and get one finished highlight in 4K and 1080p without building the edit yourself.

Skip the editing. Keep the best moments.

Upload your raw footage and get a finished highlight in 4K and 1080p - no timeline, no editing skills.
