What it means
The Max Lens Mod is a GoPro accessory that replaces the protective front cover of a HERO camera with a much wider lens. Once the camera knows it is fitted, it unlocks special modes - Max HyperSmooth and Max SuperView - that use the extra image area the new lens provides.
The name comes from the GoPro MAX 360 camera, whose horizon-leveling tricks the mod brings to a regular HERO. The extra coverage gives the stabilizer more room to crop and rotate, so the horizon can stay level even when the camera rolls far beyond what the standard lens allows.
How it works in practice
Fitting it takes a few seconds: twist off the stock lens cover, screw the mod on, then enable it in the camera settings (newer cameras can detect it automatically). The original mod suits HERO9 to HERO11; HERO12 and later use the wider second generation, which reaches roughly 177 degrees of field of view in a 4:3 frame.
Riders use it on helmet and chest mounts in MTB and motocross, where the extra width keeps the bars, the trail and the horizon in frame together. Expect fewer resolution and frame rate options while the mod is active than with the stock lens, so check your model before a shoot that needs high-fps slow motion.
What to watch out for
The mod is exposed glass that sticks out further than the stock cover, so it takes the first hit in a crash and attracts scratches. Carry a lens cloth, keep the protective cap on between runs, and remember that a scratched mod softens every clip shot through it.
Forgetting the setting is the classic error: with the mod on but the camera in normal mode, footage shows dark corners and exaggerated fisheye distortion, and the reverse mistake looks just as wrong. Also, with so much in frame your subject gets smaller - for a buddy hitting a jump at a distance, the standard lens often tells the story better.
How RawClip handles it
Footage shot with the Max Lens Mod is ordinary GoPro MP4, so you upload it to RawClip as is, in H.264 or HEVC, at resolutions up to 5.3K. The AI judges each clip by the action in it, not by the lens used, and mixes it freely with your other angles.
