Peak action

Also known as: peak of the action, apex

The frame in a movement where it is most readable, the top of a jump or the moment of contact, and the frame a shot is built around.

Updated

What it means

Every movement has a clearest instant. The highest point of an air, the compression in a turn, the moment a board hits the lip, and that one frame explains the whole action to somebody who was not there.

It is a composition idea before it is an editing one. A still photographer waits for it; an editor finds it in footage that already exists. The decision itself is the same one.

Shots are built around it rather than toward it. The In point sits before the peak and the out point after it, with the peak closer to the middle than to either end.

How it works in practice

Finding it is fast at normal speed. Scrubbing frame by frame is slower than watching and noting where the eye settles, which is almost always the peak. The eye finds it before the timeline does.

Slow motion exists to extend it. A Speed ramping pass that slows through the apex and returns afterwards gives it weight without stretching the whole clip.

Multiple angles should all contain it. A Chase cam and a fixed wide of one jump are only intercuttable if both cover the peak, which is what makes Cutting on action possible.

What to watch out for

Cutting through it is the worst mistake available. A join placed exactly on the apex removes the thing the shot was for, and no amount of coverage repairs that. The frame was the reason to keep the clip.

Not every clip has one. A long traverse or a cruise has no apex, which is why those shots are B-roll rather than action and get cut on other criteria entirely.

Automatic selection finds motion peaks rather than readable ones. Peak action detection locates where movement is greatest, and the clearest frame is sometimes a moment before that.

How RawClip handles it

Clips are trimmed so the clearest part of a movement sits inside the shot rather than at its edge, which is what makes short cuts still readable. Where the apex itself was missed on the card, no amount of trimming puts it back into the file.
