Ski pole mount

Also known as: pole mount, ski pole camera clamp

A clamp that attaches an action camera to a ski pole, turning it into a handheld stick for filming yourself, friends or the slope while skiing.

Updated

What it means

A ski pole mount clamps around the shaft of a pole, usually near the grip, and holds the camera facing back toward the skier or forward down the slope. Some designs replace the pole basket section or work with a dedicated camera pole that doubles as a ski pole.

It gives a selfie stick style angle without carrying an extra pole. You see your face, body and skis against the slope, which makes it popular for powder runs, freeride descents and touring.

Holding the pole forward or to the side changes the angle quickly between runs.

How it works in practice

Mount the camera close to the grip for balance, facing you, and hold the pole in front or slightly to the side while skiing. A 360 camera on a pole works especially well, because you can choose the angle later and the pole can disappear in the stitch zone.

For powder, ski with the camera low to catch the snow spraying over your body. For groomers, hold it higher for a wider view of the slope.

Combine pole shots with a helmet mount or chest mount for a mix of self-filmed and POV angles.

What to watch out for

Holding a pole forward changes your skiing technique and balance. Only film on terrain where you are comfortable, and never at the expense of control. Keep the pole out of the way of other skiers on busy slopes.

Cold drains batteries quickly, and the camera sits exposed on the pole. Keep spares warm and switch off between runs.

Snow and moisture fog or frost the lens easily, especially when you breathe on it or fall. Keep a dry cloth handy and avoid putting the camera in a warm pocket and then into the cold, which causes condensation. Let the camera adjust to the cold slowly when you go back outside.
