Voiceover

Also known as: VO, narration, voice-over

Narration recorded separately and laid over the footage to explain, guide or tell a story, without the speaker appearing on screen.

What it means

A voiceover is speech added in the edit rather than recorded live with the picture. The speaker, often the creator, talks over the footage to explain where they are, what happened or why a moment mattered. It turns a sequence of clips into a story with a guide.

Voiceovers are common in travel vlogs, trip reports and tutorials, and less common in pure action edits, where music carries the mood. Done well, a short voiceover at the start or between sections adds context the picture cannot show, such as the conditions that day or the risk behind a jump, strengthening the story arc of the video.

How it works in practice

Record in a quiet room with soft furnishings, close to the microphone. A lavalier, a USB mic or even a phone held about a hand's width from your mouth sounds far better than a camera mic across the room. Hanging clothes in a closet make an excellent sound booth.

Write a short script or bullet points first, then record a few takes. Speak slightly slower than normal, and leave pauses for the music.

In the edit, place the voice on its own track, keep it centered and duck the music under it with ducking.

What to watch out for

Narrating everything kills the action. Let big moments play with music and natural sound, and save the voice for context. Two or three short lines often do more than a minute of commentary.

Room echo makes a voiceover sound amateurish. Avoid bare rooms with hard walls; record somewhere with soft surfaces, such as a bedroom or a parked car.

Mismatched energy is jarring. A flat, sleepy voice over high-energy footage feels wrong, so match your tone to the pictures, and keep the voice level consistent between takes. Automatic captions of your narration help viewers who watch without sound.
