Also known as: narrative arc, story structure, three-act structure

What it means
Most stories follow a familiar shape: a setup that introduces the place and people, a build where challenges and excitement grow, a climax with the biggest moment, and a resolution that winds down. This is the story arc, often described as three acts.
Action videos can feel like random clips without it. A simple arc gives them purpose: arriving at the mountain, warming up on easy runs, building to the steepest line or biggest jump, then relaxing with friends at sunset. Viewers sense the progression even without words.
The arc can also follow the music, with intro, build, drop and outro mapping onto setup, build, climax and resolution, which is the backbone of a good montage.
How it works in practice
Before editing, decide what the story is in one sentence, such as "first powder day of the season" or "a week surfing in Portugal". Choose clips that serve that story, and order them from calm to intense.
Open with an establishing shot or a strong hook, build through varied action, place the most impressive moment near the end, and close with a calm shot that lets the viewer exhale.
Small details like faces, reactions and travel moments carry the emotional side of the arc between action shots, and they make viewers care about the people.
What to watch out for
Putting the best moment first and then fading out leaves the end flat. Save a strong moment for the climax, even if it means holding back your favorite clip until the end.
A clear arc does not need to be literal or chronological. Reordering clips to build tension is fine, as long as it feels natural and does not confuse where or when things happen.
Long edits without variation lose the arc entirely. If every section feels the same, cut repeated moments and add contrast through pacing, angles and music.
How RawClip handles it
RawClip builds your highlight around the music, which naturally gives it shape from intro to peak. Upload clips from the whole day or trip, and the AI picks and orders the strongest moments for one highlight.
