Webcam mode
Also known as: GoPro webcam, USB webcam mode
A setting that lets an action camera act as a USB webcam for video calls and streaming, using its wide lens instead of a laptop camera.

What it means
Webcam mode turns an action camera into a regular computer camera. Connect it over USB, select the mode, and video apps see it as a webcam. Some models need a desktop helper app, while newer ones work as a standard USB video device without extra software.
People use it because action cameras have better optics than many built-in laptop cameras, a wide lens that fits a group in the frame, and mounting options such as a tripod thread that let you place the camera anywhere. It also gives a second life to an older camera that no longer goes on rides.
How it works in practice
For calls, a narrower lens mode such as Linear looks more natural than a full wide view, which can make faces at the edge look stretched. Resolution in webcam mode is usually limited to 1080p or lower, which is plenty for video calls and most streams.
Power matters for long sessions. Running from USB for hours keeps the battery charging and generates heat, so many users remove the battery and run the camera from a powered connection where the model allows it. Mount it on a tripod or a monitor clip at eye level for the most flattering angle.
What to watch out for
Expect heat in a warm room. The compact body has little airflow, and long calls can make the camera throttle or shut down. A small fan or a shaded spot helps, and some users point the lens at the subject from a cooler place rather than sitting it on a hot laptop.
Audio is the other weak spot. The built-in microphones are tuned for outdoor action and wind, so voices can sound thin. An external microphone connected to the computer usually gives much clearer speech than the camera itself. Test the full setup a day before an important call, since drivers and app permissions are the usual cause of a camera that suddenly does not appear.
How RawClip handles it
Webcam mode streams live and does not record files to the card, so there is nothing to upload from it. For your ride or trip, record normally to the memory card and upload those clips, and RawClip turns them into one highlight.
