Whip pan transition

Also known as: whip pan, swish pan, flash pan

A transition built from very fast camera pans that blur the image, hiding the cut between two shots and creating an energetic jump to a new scene.

What it means

A whip pan is a camera move so fast that the image smears into streaks of motion blur. As a transition, the editor ends one clip with a whip in one direction and starts the next clip with a whip in the same direction. The cut hides inside the blur, so the two scenes seem to connect seamlessly.

It is popular in travel, vlog and action edits because it feels energetic and playful. It can also be created digitally in editing software with directional blur and motion, when the footage itself has no fast pan.

The effect works best when the direction and speed of the two pans match.

How it works in practice

Film whip pans on purpose: at the end of a shot, quickly turn the camera left or right. At the start of the next shot, begin with the same fast turn in the same direction and settle on the new scene. Keep the movement in the same direction for both.

Place the cut in the middle of the blur, where both images are unreadable. A short dissolve of a few frames inside the blur can smooth the join further.

A whoosh sound effect timed with the pan sells the transition, especially when it lands on a beat of the music.

What to watch out for

Overuse makes an edit feel gimmicky and can make viewers dizzy. One or two whip pans per video, at real changes of place, are usually enough.

Stabilized action camera footage can smooth out fast pans and reduce the blur needed for the effect. Some editors turn off stabilization for whip pan shots or add blur in post.

Pans in opposite directions break the illusion. Plan the direction before filming, and keep a note of which way each whip goes when you film several in a day for the transition library.
