Cut
Also known as: hard cut, straight cut, edit point
The point where one clip ends and the next begins with no transition effect. Most edits are made almost entirely of well-timed cuts.

What it means
A cut is the simplest and most important edit: one shot instantly replaces another. Unlike a dissolve or other transition, there is no blending. Good cuts feel invisible, because they follow the action, the music or the viewer attention so naturally that nobody notices them.
Editors also use "cut" for the whole edit, as in a rough cut or a final cut, and as a verb for editing in general. A cut on action, where the cut happens during a movement, is one of the most effective techniques for hiding edits.
The timing of cuts creates the rhythm of a video more than any effect.
How it works in practice
Cut on the beat of the music for energetic edits, or slightly before the beat so the visual change lands with the sound. Cut during motion, such as the moment a rider takes off, for smooth flow between shots.
Vary shot length. A run of very short cuts builds energy, while a longer shot lets a moment breathe. Matching cut speed to music intensity is the basis of beat sync editing.
Changing the angle or shot size between cuts, such as wide to close-up, makes cuts feel purposeful rather than jarring.
What to watch out for
Cutting between two very similar shots creates a jump cut, where the image seems to skip. Sometimes that is a style, often it looks like a mistake.
Cutting too early, before the action peaks, or too late, after the interest drops, makes edits feel off. Watch the moment play out and find the frame where it lands, then try one frame earlier and one later to compare.
Too many cuts too fast can exhaust viewers and make action hard to follow. Let key moments play long enough to register, especially the biggest jump or the cleanest wave, which deserve a beat or two of screen time.
