Wing foiling

Also known as: wingfoiling, wing surfing, winging

A water sport where a rider holds a handheld inflatable wing and rides a hydrofoil board that lifts above the surface, filmed for its silent glide.

Updated

What it means

Wing foiling combines a handheld inflatable wing, held without lines or a harness, with a board on a hydrofoil, a fin with wings that lifts the board out of the water at speed. The result is a smooth, silent glide just above the surface, with riders pumping, carving and jumping.

It is one of the fastest-growing water sports, and footage of it has a distinct look: the board floating above the water, very little spray and a calm, flowing motion. That makes it different from the hard spray of kitesurfing footage, and suits slower music and longer shots in the edit.

How it works in practice

A camera on the wing's handle or leading edge, facing the rider, shows the face, the board and the water. A board mount near the nose looking back shows the foil lift and the rider's stance.

Shore and drone angles show the glide best, especially in long shots that follow the rider along a swell. Low drone passes look spectacular but keep a safe distance, as covered under obstacle avoidance and drone rules.

Shoot at 60 fps or more and pick clips with smooth glides, transitions and jumps. Early morning or evening light on glassy water shows the foil lift far better than midday chop.

What to watch out for

Foils are sharp. A board-mounted camera near the foil mast can be damaged in falls, and any mount must be secure.

Footage can look calm to the point of boring if every clip is a straight glide. Mix angles, include turns, jumps and touchdowns, and use speed ramps sparingly.

The wing blocks the view in some angles. Test mount positions on land first so the rider is not hidden behind the fabric for the whole session. A quick test run in calm water before a windy day saves a lot of unusable footage.

How RawClip handles it

RawClip keeps the jumps, carves and peak moments from wing foil sessions and removes dull, repetitive sections. Clips from a wing mount, board mount and drone combine into one highlight cut to the beat of the music.
