Auto-reframe
Also known as: automatic reframing, smart crop
Software that moves a crop window around a wide frame so the subject stays in shot when footage is reshaped for a taller format.

What it means
Auto-reframe solves a framing problem created by delivery. A clip was shot wide, the destination wants something taller, and a fixed centre crop puts the rider half out of frame whenever the action drifts to one side.
The feature tracks the subject across the shot and pans a smaller window to follow it, so a wide original can be reshaped without a person setting keyframes by hand for every clip in the edit.
It is a tracking problem wearing a framing hat. The quality of the result depends almost entirely on how reliably the subject is held, which is why it leans on Object tracking rather than on anything to do with Aspect ratio arithmetic.
How it works in practice
Shooting wider than the delivery format leaves room for the crop to move, which is the main thing a camera operator can do to help. A Wide lens or a high resolution original both buy that room, since the window is carved out of real pixels.
Results improve sharply when the subject is unambiguous. One rider against snow tracks cleanly; a pack of six in matching kit does not, and that is where a quick manual pass earns its few minutes.
Checking the extremes is worth the time. The frames where the subject nearly leaves the shot are where a tracker either saves the clip or visibly gives up on it, and the middle of a shot rarely shows either.
What to watch out for
Jitter is the common failure. A tracker that corrects too eagerly produces a crop that twitches on every frame, which reads worse than a static crop that occasionally loses the subject altogether.
Smoothing fixes the twitch at the expense of lagging behind fast movement, so the window arrives where the action was rather than where it is. Neither setting is right for a clip containing both slow and sudden motion.
Reframing also changes composition in ways nobody asked for. A deliberate Rule of thirds placement becomes dead centre, and a horizon carefully levelled in camera can end up fighting the new edges of the frame.
How RawClip handles it
Highlights are delivered in the orientation they were shot in rather than reshaped automatically, because a crop that moves on its own undoes framing choices made while filming. Reframing is better done knowingly, for one destination at a time.
