Rough cut

Also known as: first cut, assembly edit, draft edit

An early version of an edit that puts the chosen clips in order to show the overall story and length, before fine-tuning cuts, color and sound.

What it means

A rough cut is the first full pass through an edit. The best clips are on the timeline in roughly the right order, the music or story structure is in place, and the length is close to the target. Cuts are not yet perfect, color is not graded and sound is not mixed.

Its purpose is to see the whole shape early. Does the story start strongly? Is the middle too long? Is the best moment saved for the end? Answering those questions before polishing saves a lot of wasted work on scenes that might be cut anyway.

Some editors first make an assembly, all usable clips in order, then shape it into a rough cut and finally a final cut.

How it works in practice

Start with the music or the story beats, then drop in clips that fit each section. Be generous at first, then remove what does not earn its place. Aim for a rough cut slightly longer than the target length, so there is room to tighten.

Watch the rough cut from start to finish without stopping, ideally after a short break. Note where your attention drifts, which moments feel too long and where the pacing drags.

Share the rough cut with a friend or client before polishing, since big structural changes are cheap at this stage and expensive later.

What to watch out for

Polishing too early is the most common mistake. Spending an hour on color for a clip that ends up cut is wasted effort. Get the structure right first.

Falling in love with shots is another trap. A difficult shot that was hard to get may still not serve the story. Be willing to cut it, or save it for a different edit where it fits.

Rough cuts can feel disappointing because nothing is polished yet. Judge the structure and flow, not the look, and keep in mind how much music, color and sound will lift it later.

How RawClip handles it

RawClip skips the rough cut stage for you. The AI selects the strongest moments, orders them and cuts them to the length you choose, synced to music, and delivers a finished highlight instead of a draft.

Skip the editing. Keep the best moments.

Upload your raw footage and get a finished highlight in 4K and 1080p - no timeline, no editing skills.
