Edit length

Also known as: runtime, duration

How long a finished edit runs, decided by the platform and the audience rather than by how much usable footage a session produced.

Updated

What it means

Length is a choice, not a consequence. A session with forty good clips does not require a four-minute edit; it allows one, which is a different statement. Permission is not an obligation.

Platforms have ranges that work. Under a minute for a vertical feed, one to three minutes for a shared session edit, longer only when there is a reason a viewer would stay for it, which the material has to supply.

Audience retention is the measure that settles arguments. An edit that loses half its viewers before the end was too long whatever its maker thought. The data is unsentimental.

How it works in practice

The honest method is cutting to what holds. Assemble everything worth keeping, then remove whatever does not earn its place, and the length is whatever remains. Deciding the number first is how padding gets in.

Two versions beat one compromise. A short vertical cut and a longer widescreen edit from the same material serve both audiences, where a single middling length serves neither of them well.

Section structure matters more as length grows. Beyond two minutes a Story arc with distinct phases is what keeps a viewer, because density alone stops working once a viewer has settled in.

What to watch out for

Padding is the universal failure. Repeated angles, long approaches and Dead time inside shots stretch an edit without adding anything to it. Every one of them felt justified at the time.

Short is not automatically better. Cutting a two-minute session to thirty seconds throws away the variety that made it worth watching, and what remains is a Supercut without context.

Music frequently sets the real limit. A track is a fixed length, and either the edit is cut to it or the track is edited, which is work people discover late.

How RawClip handles it

Length follows the material and the stated purpose rather than a fixed target, so a session with many strong moments produces a longer sequence than a quiet one. Asking for a particular duration in the brief is what fixes it when a platform requires a specific shape.

Skip the editing. Keep the best moments.
