Flight time

Also known as: battery flight time, endurance, airtime

How long a drone can fly on one battery. Rated figures assume ideal conditions; wind, cold, speed and payload shorten real flights considerably.

Updated

What it means

Manufacturers quote maximum flight time measured in calm conditions at an efficient cruising speed, often with no extras attached. Real flights are shorter. Hovering in wind, flying in Sport mode, climbing, cold temperatures, propeller guards and filters all reduce the time in the air.

For filming, the useful time is shorter still. You need time to take off, get into position, record several takes and return with a safe reserve. A drone rated for 30 minutes may give 15 to 20 minutes of actual shooting.

Battery age matters too. Older packs hold less charge and may report levels less accurately, so test them before relying on them.

How it works in practice

Bring several batteries and charge them before the trip. Plan shots so each battery has a clear purpose, such as one for a reveal and establishing shots, another for tracking the riders.

Land with a reserve, typically 20 to 30 percent, especially in wind or cold. Warm batteries before flying in winter by keeping them in an inside pocket or the car, since cold cells sag in voltage.

Watch the app battery estimate, which accounts for distance and wind, rather than the percentage alone. A windy day can halve the useful time compared with the rating, so plan fewer, better shots per battery.

What to watch out for

Chasing one more shot at low battery is how many drones are lost. The drone may trigger Return to Home or force a landing in a bad spot. Respect the warnings.

Cold weather can make a battery drop suddenly from a healthy level, sometimes in the middle of a flight. Keep extra margin in winter.

Storing drone batteries fully charged for long periods damages them, and many smart batteries self-discharge to a storage level. Plan charging so packs are full on the day of the shoot, not a week before.
