Sub-250 g drone
Also known as: under 250 grams drone, mini drone, 249 g drone
A drone weighing less than 250 grams at takeoff, a category that often faces lighter rules in many countries and fits easily in a travel bag.

What it means
Many drone regulations use 250 grams as a threshold. Below it, some requirements such as registration, tests or distance rules may be lighter or absent, depending on the country. Manufacturers responded with drones designed to weigh just under the limit, such as the DJI Mini series.
Small size also makes them popular for travel and hiking, where weight and bulk matter. Modern sub-250 g drones record high-resolution video, often with features like true vertical shooting and tracking that used to need bigger aircraft.
The trade-off is lower wind resistance and, in some cases, a smaller sensor than larger drones.
How it works in practice
Keep the takeoff weight under the limit if that matters for your local rules. Larger batteries, propeller guards and filters can push the total over 250 grams, which may change the rules that apply.
Fly them in calmer conditions, since light drones get pushed around by wind. Plan flights with the wind direction in mind, and keep enough battery for the return. Propeller guards add safety near people but also add weight.
Their small size makes them hard to see at a distance, so keep them closer than a larger drone to stay within visual range. They are also quieter, which helps around wildlife and people, but makes them harder to locate by sound.
What to watch out for
A light drone is not automatically legal everywhere. Many countries still require registration, Remote ID, or respect for restricted areas and privacy rules regardless of weight. This is general information, not legal advice, so check the rules where you fly.
Accessories can quietly change the category. A heavier battery for longer flight time may push the drone over the threshold.
Small drones are more vulnerable in wind near cliffs and coasts. A gust can push them away faster than they can fly back, so avoid flying far downwind, and check zones before takeoff.
How RawClip handles it
Footage from small travel drones works perfectly with RawClip. Upload your aerial clips together with action-camera footage from the same trip, and the AI picks the best moments for one highlight.
