Freeze frame
Also known as: still frame, frame hold, freeze
Holding a single frame of video on screen for a moment, stopping the action at its peak for emphasis, a title or a dramatic ending.

What it means
A freeze frame takes one frame from a clip and displays it as a still image for a set duration. The action stops abruptly, often at the highest point of a jump, the moment of a splash or a perfect facial expression, then the video continues or ends.
It is a strong stylistic tool. A freeze at the peak of a trick emphasizes the moment, a freeze with a name card introduces a rider, and a freeze at the very end of a video gives a memorable final image. Comedy edits use freezes before something goes wrong, often with a text like "this is going to hurt".
Because the motion stops, the chosen frame must be sharp and well composed.
How it works in practice
Pick a frame where the subject is sharp and the pose is strong. Footage shot with a fast shutter speed and high resolution gives the cleanest freezes, much like a frame grab.
Add subtle motion to the freeze, such as a slow zoom, to keep it from feeling dead. A sound effect or a beat in the music at the moment of the freeze makes it land harder.
Use freezes sparingly: one for a rider introduction, one at the climax, or one at the end. Hold each for a second or two, rarely longer.
What to watch out for
Freezing a blurry frame looks bad and amateurish on any screen. Motion blur that feels natural in moving video becomes obvious in a still.
Compression artifacts and noise are more visible in a frozen frame. Use a good-quality source and avoid freezing heavily compressed footage downloaded from a platform.
Overused freezes feel gimmicky, especially in fast edits. Keep them for moments that truly deserve to stop time, and keep them short so the energy does not drain from the edit. A freeze that lasts too long starts to feel like a mistake.
