Instant replay

Also known as: replay, action replay, slow-motion replay

Repeating a key moment right after it happens, often in slow motion or from another angle, so viewers can see a jump, trick or crash in detail.

What it means

Sports broadcasts made the instant replay famous: a goal or a crash shown again immediately, slower or from a new camera. In action edits, the same idea highlights the most impressive moment. The viewer sees it at full speed, then again in slow motion to appreciate the details.

Replays work because big moments happen too fast to take in properly the first time. A slower second look shows the body position, the spray, the height, or the exact moment of a crash.

Replays often use a different angle, such as a ground camera after a POV shot, or a speed ramp into slow motion at the peak.

How it works in practice

Record key moments at a high frame rate so the replay stays smooth. Film from at least two angles when possible, so the replay adds information rather than just repeating. A ground camera on a tripod beside a jump is often enough.

Keep replays short and reserve them for the best moments. One or two replays per edit feel special, while replaying everything slows the video down.

A short sound effect, a change in music or a brief white flash signals the replay, so viewers understand that time is repeating and do not think the edit glitched.

What to watch out for

Slowing down footage recorded at 30 fps makes it stutter badly on screen, which looks cheap. Use high frame rate clips or frame interpolation tools carefully, since interpolation can create artifacts in fast action.

Replays of mediocre moments feel forced. If the moment does not impress twice, show it once and move on to the next highlight.

Too long a replay kills momentum. A few seconds is usually enough to show the detail before returning to the flow of the edit. Watch the replay in context and trim it until it feels tight.
