What it means
Title cards are text moments in an edit. A main title names the video, often during the opening sequence. Location titles tell viewers where a scene happens. Chapter cards separate days or sections of a trip, and end cards show credits, music information or a call to action.
They can be plain text on black, animated graphics, or text placed over moving footage. Over footage usually feels more modern and keeps energy up, while text on black gives a clear pause, similar to a fade to black.
In action edits, titles should support the footage rather than compete with it, which usually means fewer words and simpler design than you first expect.
How it works in practice
Keep text short, readable and on screen long enough to read twice comfortably. Choose one or two fonts for the whole video and use them consistently. Place titles over calm parts of the shot, such as sky or dark ground, so they stay legible.
For social videos, place text inside the safe zones so interface buttons and captions do not cover it. Larger text works better on phones than delicate thin fonts.
Time titles with the music: a title that appears on a beat and disappears on the next phrase feels intentional.
What to watch out for
Long animated title sequences delay the action and lose viewers. Keep the main title brief, or put it after the hook so the action comes first.
Low contrast text, such as white letters over snow, becomes unreadable. Add a subtle shadow or background, or move the text to a darker area of the frame.
Typos in titles are surprisingly common and very visible. Check spelling, especially names and locations, before exporting. Too many different fonts and effects also make an edit look amateur. Simple, consistent text usually looks the most professional and ages best.
