Goggle mount

Also known as: goggle strap mount, ski goggle camera mount

A clip that attaches an action camera to the strap of ski, snowboard or motocross goggles, giving a true eye-level POV of what the rider sees.

Updated

What it means

A goggle mount clips onto the elastic strap of a pair of goggles, usually at the front of the helmet or right on the strap near the forehead. The camera sits almost at eye level, so the footage shows exactly what the rider sees, including hands, poles or handlebars in front.

Compared with a helmet mount on top of the helmet, the lower position feels more immersive and less like a view from above. It is popular for skiing, snowboarding and motocross, where goggles are standard equipment.

The mount is light and simple, which keeps weight on the head low and the setup quick.

How it works in practice

Position the camera as close to the center of the forehead as possible to avoid a lopsided view. Tighten the goggle strap enough that the camera does not bounce, but not so tight that it is uncomfortable for a full day.

A wide lens mode shows more of the surroundings and the hands, which helps viewers feel the speed. Stabilization handles head movement well, though fast head turns still show up. Pair it with a chest mount on another rider for variety.

In motocross, goggle mounts give a raw, eye-level view of the track that suits short, intense sections rather than full motos.

What to watch out for

Any weight on a goggle strap can pull the goggles down or shift them, especially in crashes. Use small, light cameras and check fit regularly.

A camera on the strap is exposed in falls and can twist the head in a bad crash. Many riders and some competitions discourage hard objects on helmets and straps, so check the rules and consider your safety first.

Breath and body heat can fog a camera mounted close to the face. Keep the lens dry and avoid breathing on it while stopped, as described under housing fog.
