What it means
Full-face helmets used in motocross, downhill mountain biking and some snow sports have a chin bar in front of the mouth. A chin mount sticks to or clamps onto that bar, putting the camera low, centered and close to eye level. The view includes the handlebars, the rider hands and the terrain ahead, which feels very immersive.
Many riders consider it the best POV position: lower and more natural than a top helmet mount, and steadier than a chest mount that moves with breathing and body position.
It is also less likely to catch branches than a camera on top of the helmet.
How it works in practice
Use a curved adhesive base designed for chin bars or a strap mount if the helmet shape allows it. Clean the surface, apply at room temperature and wait before riding. Mount the camera upside down if needed, since most cameras can rotate the image automatically.
A wide lens mode with strong stabilization shows the bars and the trail. Tilt the camera so the horizon sits in the upper part of the frame and the handlebars are just visible at the bottom.
For motocross, the chin view shows throttle control and the track ahead, which makes hot laps easy to follow.
What to watch out for
Breath fogs a camera mounted right in front of the mouth, especially in cold or wet weather. Keep the lens clean and use anti-fog measures where possible, as described under housing fog.
In crashes, the chin bar takes hits, and a protruding camera can catch on the ground. Helmet makers may advise against attaching anything, so check the guidance and use low-profile mounts.
The microphone sits near your mouth, so heavy breathing and shouting are very audible. Many riders replace that audio with music in the edit or keep it for a raw feel, which suits short race clips.
How RawClip handles it
Chin mount clips give some of the most immersive POV angles. Upload your full ride, and RawClip keeps the fastest, most exciting sections and cuts them into one highlight synced to music.
