Hydrofoiling

Also known as: foiling, foil board

Riding a board lifted clear of the water on a submerged wing, powered by a wave, a kite or a tow rather than by a motor.

Updated

What it means

A foil replaces contact with the water. Above a certain speed the wing under the board generates lift, the hull leaves the surface, and the drag collapses, which is why foiling feels fast and quiet.

The visual signature is the gap. A board travelling with clear air beneath it is what distinguishes the sport at a glance, and a clip that does not show that gap shows nothing distinctive.

It is the unpowered relative of an E-foil. The lift mechanism is identical and the power comes from a wave, a kite or a boat rather than from a battery.

How it works in practice

The gap is the shot and it needs a low angle. A camera close to the water looking along the surface shows the board flying, where anything from above flattens it into an ordinary pass.

A drone handles the travelling shots. Long reaches across open water suit an aerial pass, and a Tracking shot from above shows the line and the speed that a fixed camera misses.

Spray and reflection both need managing. A Polarizing filter (CPL) cuts glare off the water and makes the wing visible under the surface, which is otherwise lost to reflection entirely.

What to watch out for

A crash puts the foil in play. A submerged wing is sharp and heavy, which makes a fall different from falling off an ordinary board, and it changes where anybody can safely film from, which rules out a Low-angle shot in the impact zone.

Open water offers no reference for speed. Flat water with no features makes a fast pass look slow, so a shoreline, a boat or a rider in frame is what gives the eye something.

Salt water ends equipment quietly. Anything not rinsed properly corrodes, and a mount that seemed fine for a season fails at the moment it is holding a camera over water.

How RawClip handles it

Travelling passes over water score well on continuous motion and cut cleanly against music. Clips where the gap under the board is visible read as the distinctive shots, which is a framing decision made at capture rather than afterwards.
