Light Mod

Also known as: GoPro Light Mod, action camera video light, mini LED light

A small waterproof LED light for action cameras that mounts on a cold shoe or mounting fingers to brighten faces and close subjects in dim light.

What it means

A Light Mod is a compact LED panel designed to sit next to an action camera. GoPro sells its own version, and many brands make similar lights with cold shoe or mounting finger attachments. They usually offer a few brightness levels, sometimes a strobe, and a built-in battery charged over USB.

The light is not meant to light up a whole forest or a ski slope. Its job is the close range: a face in a tent, a dashboard at night, a vlog in a dim cafe, or a subject a few meters away on an evening ride where the camera would otherwise struggle with low light.

How it works in practice

Mount it on a Media Mod shoe, a cold shoe adapter or directly on a mounting point beside the camera. Angle it slightly off the lens axis so faces get some shape instead of flat, harsh light. Lower brightness often looks more natural than full power.

Waterproof versions also work as a basic dive or snorkel light at shallow depth, where they bring back a little color to close subjects. For real dive lighting you need far more output, such as a dedicated underwater video light with a wide beam and a long burn time.

What to watch out for

Small lights run out of charge quickly at full power, often well before the camera, and cold weather shortens their runtime further. Carry a power bank or a second light for long evenings, and switch it off between shots.

Light also attracts attention and bugs, and it can reflect off rain, snow and water droplets in front of the lens, creating bright spots that ruin the shot. In fog or snowfall, try moving the light to the side or turning it down. And do not point it at other riders or drivers, since a sudden bright light at night can blind them and create danger.
