Night mode
Also known as: low-light mode, night video mode
A camera setting tuned for dark scenes that changes exposure, noise reduction and frame rate to keep night footage brighter and cleaner than standard modes.

What it means
Night mode is a preset that tells the camera to prioritize brightness and clean images over fast motion. Depending on the model, it may lower the frame rate, allow longer exposures, combine frames, apply stronger noise reduction or use special sensor readouts. The goal is a usable picture where the normal mode would be dark and grainy.
It is different from night lapse, which records a time-lapse with long exposures. Night mode records normal-speed video, just processed differently. Phones made the idea popular, and some action cameras and drones now offer their own versions with similar trade-offs.
How it works in practice
Night mode works best for calm scenes: city streets, campfires, a dinner after the ride, or a slow walk under street lights. Stabilize the camera on a tripod or a solid mount where possible, because longer exposures make any movement smear.
Many night modes cap the frame rate at 24 or 30 fps and may lower resolution. That is fine for atmosphere shots. For fast action at night, extra light from a headlamp, a bike light or a video light helps more than any mode, since no processing can fully replace photons.
What to watch out for
Strong noise reduction makes skin look waxy and textures like grass or gravel turn into a smooth paste, and the effect is more visible on a big screen than on the camera. Moving subjects can also leave trails or ghosts when frames are combined.
Night modes are often less suited to fast motion. On a bike or skis at night, the long exposure turns every bump into blur, and stabilization can make it pulse. Decide whether you want clean, slow atmosphere shots or sharp action, and if you need both, carry a light and use a normal mode with a fixed shutter speed for the action.
How RawClip handles it
RawClip does not brighten or denoise clips, so night footage stays as your camera recorded it. Upload day and night clips together, and the AI picks the strongest moments for your highlight, whatever the light.
