Plugin
Also known as: extension, effect plugin
An add-on that gives an editing application a capability it does not ship with, from stabilisation and denoise to transitions and grading tools.
Updated
What it means
A plugin extends a host application. The editor provides the timeline and the plugin provides one operation, which is why the same stabiliser turns up in several applications. The host is almost incidental.
Categories matter more than brands. Stabilisation, noise reduction, optical flow retiming, grading panels and transition packs cover almost everything on offer, and the rest are variations on one of them.
A Preset is not a plugin. One is a saved set of values inside a tool; the other adds the tool. The distinction matters as soon as something stops working, because only one of the two can be missing.
How it works in practice
The ones worth having solve things the host does poorly. A dedicated denoiser or a better Warp stabilizer alternative are genuine additions; a transition pack is decoration. The test is whether the host already tries.
Optical flow retiming is the clearest example. Good frame generation is specialist work, and the plugins that do it well do it visibly better than a built-in option.
Fewer is better. Each one is another thing to update when the host changes, and a project depending on six plugins is a project that is hard to open anywhere else or at any later date.
What to watch out for
Plugins are the usual cause of instability. A Render crash on a long export is more often an effect than the application, which is why removing them is the first diagnostic step rather than the last resort.
They also make projects unportable. Opening a sequence on a machine without the same plugins produces missing effects, which is worse than Offline media because the structure is intact and wrong.
Updates break them routinely. A host update can leave an effect non-functional until its author catches up, and the middle of an edit is the wrong time to find out.
How RawClip handles it
Nothing about a delivered sequence depends on plugins, since stabilisation, noise reduction and grading are applied before the result is produced. A finished file opens in any application without needing anything installed alongside it, on any machine, at any time.
