Propeller guards
Also known as: prop guards, propeller protectors, ducts
Frames or rings around drone propellers that reduce damage and injury in close contact, at the expense of extra weight, drag and shorter flights.

What it means
Propeller guards surround the spinning props with a plastic or carbon frame. On consumer drones they clip on as an accessory, while cinewhoops and tiny whoops have ducts built into the frame. The guards protect props, people and objects when the drone touches something.
They make flying close to people, trees and buildings less risky, which is why they are popular for indoor flights, beginners and filming in tight spaces. They do not make a drone harmless, but they reduce the damage from light contact.
Ducted designs also change airflow, which can improve efficiency at low speeds on small drones.
How it works in practice
Use guards when flying indoors, near people, through forests or in tight spaces, and while learning. Take them off for open, high-altitude flights, where they add weight and wind resistance without much benefit.
Check that the guards are fitted securely and do not touch the props. A guard that flexes into a spinning prop can cause a crash in itself. Inspect them after any contact, since a cracked guard can break apart in flight.
Remember that guards add weight, which may affect weight categories and shortens flight time, so plan batteries accordingly. For a fly-through of a building, the extra safety is usually worth it.
What to watch out for
Guards can appear in the frame, especially on wide lenses or when the gimbal tilts up. Check the preview and adjust the camera angle.
Added surface area makes the drone more sensitive to wind. In gusty conditions, guards can make it harder to hold position, and the drone may drift more than usual, which increases wind related risks near obstacles.
Guards do not protect against everything. A drone falling from height or hitting someone at speed can still cause injury. Fly responsibly, keep distance from people where possible, and follow local rules on flying near crowds. Guards are a backup, not permission to fly over people.
How RawClip handles it
Guarded drones let you fly closer for intimate shots indoors or in the forest. Upload those clips with your other footage, and RawClip picks the best moments for one highlight.
