Safe zones

Also known as: safe area, UI safe zone, title safe

The central area of a video frame that stays visible on a platform, free from buttons, captions and crops, where text and key action belong.

Updated

What it means

A safe zone is the part of the frame you can trust to be seen. On TikTok, Reels and Shorts, the app lays buttons on the right, the caption and username at the bottom and sometimes a search bar or header at the top. Anything placed there is partly hidden.

The idea comes from broadcast television, where old TVs cut off frame edges, and editors kept titles inside a title safe area. Today the same rule applies to vertical video in phone apps. Keeping faces, action and any titles in the safe zone ensures viewers actually see them.

How it works in practice

For 9:16 videos at 1080 by 1920 pixels, a common rule of thumb is to keep key content out of roughly the bottom 20 to 25 percent and the right-hand 10 to 15 percent, plus a margin at the top. Exact areas differ by app and change with updates.

Many editors offer safe zone overlays or templates for each platform. Turn them on while placing text, captions and stickers, especially auto captions, which often default to the bottom of the frame.

When cropping wide footage to vertical, center the subject slightly above the middle so it stays clear of the bottom overlay.

What to watch out for

Platforms change their interface often. A layout that worked last year may now be covered by a new button. Check your video in the actual app after posting.

Covers and thumbnails crop differently from the video itself. A profile grid may show a square or 3:4 crop of a vertical video, so check the cover too.

Widescreen videos have safe zones too. TVs and some players still overscan or overlay controls, so keep important text away from the very edges of 16:9 frames. Fast action near the edge of a vertical crop is easily lost behind the Shorts buttons.

How RawClip handles it

RawClip delivers clean widescreen highlights in 4K and 1080p MP4 without text overlays, so there is nothing to hide. If you crop the result to vertical for social apps, keep the action inside each platform's safe zone.
