Instagram Reels

Also known as: Reels, IG Reels

Instagram's short vertical video format with music, effects and its own feed, used by creators to reach people beyond their followers.

Updated

What it means

Reels are Instagram's short-form videos: vertical, full-screen, with music and text, shown in a dedicated feed and in the main feed. Since Instagram moved heavily toward video, almost every video posted there is treated as a Reel. They also appear on Facebook for linked accounts.

For action sports, Reels are where many viewers discover creators, brands and spots. A Reel with a strong first second and a satisfying payoff can be shown to people far beyond the account's followers. The format rewards short, energetic edits with a clear hook and music that fits the cut, often edited with beat sync.

How it works in practice

Reels are 9:16, 1080 by 1920 pixels. Crop widescreen footage around the action, or reframe 360 footage in the camera app before export.

Upload high-quality files. Instagram compresses heavily, so start from a clean, high-bitrate 1080p export rather than a copy that was already recompressed, see platform recompression.

Instagram shows a cover frame in the profile grid, cropped differently from the video. Pick a strong moment as the cover and check how it looks in the grid view too. Add a short caption and a few relevant tags, and post when your audience is active.

What to watch out for

Text and stickers near the bottom of the frame are hidden behind the caption and buttons. Keep important elements in the center, see safe zones.

Music added in Instagram is licensed only inside the app; downloading the Reel and reposting elsewhere can bring copyright trouble. Business accounts have a smaller music library, limited to tracks cleared for commercial use.

Reposting a TikTok with its watermark can reduce reach, as platforms prefer original uploads. Export a clean version for each platform instead of downloading from one and uploading to another, which also avoids a second round of compression.

How RawClip handles it

RawClip delivers widescreen highlights in 4K and 1080p MP4 with music included; it does not output 9:16. For Reels, crop the finished video to vertical in an editor or app, starting from the 4K file for the sharpest result.
