Slow upload speed

Also known as: upload bottleneck, slow connection

The practical limit on moving footage off a machine, which decides whether cloud workflows are usable at all for hours of video.

Updated

What it means

Upload is the asymmetric half of a connection. Domestic lines download quickly and upload slowly, frequently by a factor of ten, and video is the one thing that needs the slow direction. The number advertised is the download one.

Volume makes it decisive. Hours of 4K at high Bitrate is tens of gigabytes, and at a typical domestic rate that is an overnight job rather than a pause in the afternoon.

It is the reason local workflows persist. An External drive moves a session in the time a connection needs to start on it, which keeps physical media competitive for no other reason than throughput.

How it works in practice

Starting it and walking away is the whole technique. An upload begun before sleep or a drive home removes the waiting entirely, which is the same logic as File transfer time. The copy needs no supervision.

Resumable transfers are what make a long upload survivable. A Resumable upload continues after a dropped connection rather than starting again, which matters more than raw speed, because one restart undoes an hour.

Reducing what is sent beats waiting faster. Deleting failures on the card and uploading one session rather than six changes the figure more than any connection upgrade would. Sending less is the only reliable lever.

What to watch out for

Wireless is usually the actual bottleneck. A connection rated faster than the wireless link between the machine and the router delivers the wireless rate instead, and the weakest link decides the whole figure.

Background uploads fight everything else. A saturated upload makes calls, pages and anything interactive worse, which is why they tend to get cancelled halfway. Overnight exists for exactly this reason.

Proxies do not help here. Uploading Proxy editing files instead of originals sends less data and sends the wrong data, because the analysis wants what the camera recorded rather than a reduced copy of it.

How RawClip handles it

Uploading is the one step that depends on a connection, which is why it is resumable and runs in the background rather than demanding attention. Processing starts from what arrived, so a long upload is unattended waiting rather than an evening spent at a machine.
