Also known as: video thumbnail, cover image, cover frame

The still image shown for a video before it plays, in search results, feeds and profiles, and often the deciding factor in whether people click.

What it means

A thumbnail is the poster of a video. On YouTube it appears in search, recommendations and the channel page; on Instagram and TikTok a cover frame shows in profile grids. Before anyone sees a second of footage, the thumbnail and title decide whether they click.

Good thumbnails are simple and readable at tiny sizes: one clear subject, strong contrast, a face showing emotion or a moment of peak action, and sometimes a few bold words. A frame grab from the video is the starting point for many action creators, often brightened and cropped for impact.

How it works in practice

YouTube thumbnails are 1280 by 720 pixels, 16:9. Pick a frame from the best moment, a rider in the air, a face mid-scream, a wave at its peak, and crop it so the subject fills the frame.

Shoot at high resolution and with a fast shutter if you plan to pull thumbnails from video; motion blur that looks natural in playback looks soft as a still. 4K and 5.3K footage give sharp grabs.

Check readability by viewing the thumbnail at small size on a phone. Test variations; YouTube offers thumbnail testing on many channels, comparing several images on real viewers.

What to watch out for

Misleading thumbnails backfire. If the video does not deliver what the image promises, viewers leave quickly, which hurts audience retention and future reach.

Too much text or detail turns into mush at small sizes. Use at most a few words and one main subject, and avoid busy backgrounds that compete with it.

Vertical platforms crop covers differently. A cover chosen for a vertical Reel is shown cropped square in the profile grid, so check that the key part survives both crops. Keep important details away from the corner where YouTube places the video length.
