Hook

Also known as: opening hook, cold open, first three seconds

The opening moment of a video designed to grab attention immediately, so viewers keep watching instead of scrolling past. Crucial on social platforms.

What it means

On social platforms, people decide within moments whether to keep watching. The hook is what wins that decision: a striking image, a question, a moment of tension or the most impressive shot of the video, placed right at the start.

Traditional films often build slowly, starting with an establishing shot. Social videos flip that order. They open with the payoff, or a teaser of it, then explain or build afterwards. A huge jump, a near miss or a breathtaking view in the first second stops the scroll.

A hook can be visual, spoken or written, and the strongest ones combine all three in one moment.

How it works in practice

Start with your best or most surprising moment, then cut back to the beginning of the story. Alternatively, use a short flash-forward: show the peak of the action for a second, then rewind to the start with a rewind effect or a cut.

Add a short text or caption that creates curiosity, such as a question or a hint of what is coming. Keep it inside the safe zones so it is not hidden by interface buttons.

Test different openings. Small changes to the first seconds often change how long people watch more than anything else in the edit.

What to watch out for

Clickbait hooks that promise something the video does not deliver hurt retention and trust. Make sure the payoff matches the promise, or viewers will leave and remember it.

Slow logos, long intros and black frames at the start lose viewers before the action begins. Put branding at the end or keep it very short, a second at most.

Using the best shot as the hook can leave the ending flat. Keep another strong moment for the end, or show the hook moment again with more context, so the video pays off twice.
