Adhesive mount

Also known as: sticky mount, flat mount, curved mount, 3M mount

A flat or curved base with strong adhesive that sticks permanently to helmets, boards and vehicles, giving a low, solid mounting point for an action camera.

What it means

Adhesive mounts are small plastic bases with a strong, usually 3M-type adhesive pad. Flat versions stick to boards, car panels and flat surfaces, while curved versions fit helmets. Once stuck, they provide a permanent, low-profile anchor that the camera clips onto with mounting fingers or a buckle.

They are the classic way to mount cameras on ski and motorcycle helmets, surfboards, kayaks and car bodywork. Because they sit so close to the surface, they are stiffer and less prone to vibration than clamps or straps.

They are meant to stay on, so placement is a one-time decision.

How it works in practice

Clean the surface with alcohol, let it dry, and apply the mount at room temperature, pressing firmly for 30 seconds. Wait at least 24 hours before use, so the adhesive reaches full strength. Cold surfaces bond poorly, so warm them first in winter.

Plan placement before sticking. On helmets, the front or side gives a natural POV, and on boards the nose facing back is classic. Buy several bases so each helmet or board has one, and move the camera between them with a quick-release buckle.

A tether attached to another anchor adds security for water and high-speed use.

What to watch out for

Adhesive does not stick well to textured, oily or flexible surfaces, such as some bike helmets or soft foam. Use a vented strap or a clamp there instead, since a mount that peels off mid-run usually takes the camera with it.

Removing a mount can damage paint, wax or helmet finishes. Heat the adhesive with a hairdryer and slide floss under it to remove it gently, then clean off the residue with a little alcohol.

Some helmet makers warn that stuck-on mounts may affect crash behavior, and some events prohibit them. Check the guidance for your helmet and your sport before sticking anything on it.
