Magnetic mount

Also known as: magnet mount, magnetic base

A mount with a strong magnet base that sticks to steel surfaces like car bodies, railings or gym equipment, for quick, tool-free camera placement.

What it means

A magnetic mount uses a powerful magnet, often a neodymium magnet with a rubber coating, to stick to steel. Cars, trucks, metal railings, gym racks, scaffolding and boat fittings all become instant mounting points. It is different from a magnetic quick-release, which uses magnets to join the camera to another mount.

The appeal is speed and flexibility. You can place a camera on a car door, a squat rack or a metal pole almost instantly, move it to another spot and leave no marks. Rubber-coated bases protect paint.

Combined with a ball head or arm, it can point the camera in almost any direction.

How it works in practice

Check that the surface is magnetic steel, not aluminum or a painted plastic panel. Clean both surfaces so grit does not scratch the paint or weaken the hold. Larger magnets hold far better, especially for outside use on vehicles.

On cars, add a tether and keep speeds moderate while testing. In gyms and training spaces, a magnetic mount on a rack or frame gives an easy fixed angle of lifting or sparring.

A shorter arm keeps the camera closer to the magnet, which reduces leverage and vibration. For tripod-style static shots, a magnet on a solid frame is often steadier than a light tripod.

What to watch out for

Magnets slide on smooth surfaces when shaken sideways, even if they resist being pulled straight off. Vibration and bumps can move the camera slowly over a ride, so the framing at the end of a session may be quite different from the start.

Strong magnets can interfere with compasses, electronics and some bike computers. Keep them away from drones, navigation gear and sensitive devices, and never store them next to bank cards or a Gimbal.

Grit trapped under a magnet scratches paint. Wipe both surfaces before every use and avoid sliding the mount into place; lift it off and place it again instead.
