Backcountry
Also known as: off-piste, sidecountry
Terrain beyond patrolled boundaries, reached on foot or by lift and then hiked, where filming has to survive cold, distance and no second attempt.

What it means
Backcountry means no infrastructure. No lift back down, no patrol, no power and no shelter anywhere, which turns every piece of equipment into something that has to be carried in and then kept working.
The filming problem is one of chances. A line is ridden once, the light does what it does, and nothing about the day can be repeated, because getting there in the first place took two hours.
It is the opposite situation from a resort session. A Park lap can be filmed again immediately from a better angle, and a backcountry descent cannot be filmed again at all.
How it works in practice
Batteries live against the body. Cold-weather battery life collapses in the cold, and the only reliable answer is carrying spares somewhere warm and swapping them often rather than nursing one along.
A worn camera covers what a filmer cannot reach. One angle that definitely exists beats three that depend on somebody being in the right position after a long climb.
Settings are decided before the descent. Nobody adjusts a menu with gloves on at the top of a line, so exposure and frame rate are set while standing still and then left alone entirely.
What to watch out for
Cold kills recordings in two ways. A battery dying mid-run and condensation when equipment comes indoors, and the second produces Housing fog that ruins everything shot for the rest of the day.
The volume is small and the stakes are high. A whole day can produce four clips, which means a single Memory card problem removes the entire reason the trip happened.
Weight is a real constraint on ambition. Every additional camera is carried uphill, and the honest answer is usually fewer cameras and better positioning rather than carrying more equipment.
How RawClip handles it
A session that produced four clips still assembles into something short and watchable, since the selection works on whatever actually arrived rather than needing volume to choose from. The value here is that nothing has to be reviewed on a laptop in a hut.
