DJI Avata

Also known as: Avata, Avata 2

DJI's cinewhoop style FPV aircraft, flown with goggles inside ducted propellers, built for fast low passes close to people and obstacles.

Updated

What it means

The Avata sits between two worlds. It flies like an FPV quad, with goggles and a manual feel, but arrives ready to fly and stabilised enough that a first flight is not a repair job.

Ducted propellers are the defining feature. Guards built into the airframe make a brush against a wall or a branch survivable, which is what allows the Cinewhoop style of low, tight flying.

Image quality is deliberately action-camera class rather than cinema class, so its clips cut together naturally with a GoPro on a helmet instead of standing apart, which is the whole reason it works in a mixed session.

How it works in practice

Flights are short. Anyone shooting seriously plans passes in advance and lands with charge left, because an Avata on a low battery handles differently than a fresh one. Spares are part of the kit, not an extra.

Footage arrives with the house look of DJI bodies, which matters when the session also holds Insta360 or GoPro clips and Color matching has real work to do.

Most pilots fly a stabilised mode first and move to Acro mode only once the line is known, since a blind line flown manually is how aircraft end up in trees.

What to watch out for

Propeller noise dominates the recorded audio. The onboard track is useful for sync and almost never usable as sound, so a plan for Background music or an external recorder is assumed from the start.

Wind affects it more than its size suggests. A ducted airframe catches gusts, and the aircraft holds position by working harder, which shortens the flight and introduces small sway into otherwise smooth passes.

Regulation does not care that it looks like a toy. Weight and camera put it under the same rules as larger aircraft in most places, so Remote ID and registration still apply.

How RawClip handles it

Low fast passes are strong candidates during selection, since the forward motion gives an obvious direction and a clear in point. Propeller noise is replaced rather than mixed, and the DJI colour profile is reconciled with other bodies while the sequence is assembled.
