Dual battery charger

Also known as: battery charger, multi-battery charger

A charger that tops up two or more spare camera batteries at once, outside the camera, so a fresh rotation is ready for the next session.

What it means

Charging batteries inside the camera ties up the camera and charges only one battery at a time. A dual charger holds two batteries, sometimes three, and charges them together over USB. Many show the charge level of each battery with lights or a small display.

For action filming, where battery life is short and spares are essential, a dual charger is what makes a rotation practical. You charge one pair overnight, film with another, and swap during breaks.

Some chargers also double as storage cases, which protects spare batteries from short circuits in a pocket or bag.

How it works in practice

Label your batteries with numbers or colored tape so you can rotate them evenly and spot one that starts dying early. Charge from a fast USB power supply or a power bank, which also lets you recharge in the car or at a lodge without a wall socket.

On cold days, keep the charged batteries warm in an inside pocket and swap them in just before recording. Batteries charge slowly or not at all when very cold, so let them warm up before charging. Cold-tuned batteries like the Enduro still benefit from a warm pocket.

A charger and a pair of spares often extend a day of filming more than any setting change.

What to watch out for

Cheap chargers can overheat batteries or fail to stop charging, which shortens battery life and in rare cases damages cells. Use reputable chargers that match your battery type.

Mixing old and new batteries in a rotation hides weak ones. A battery that drains much faster than the others should be retired before it shuts the camera down mid-run.

Never charge damaged, swollen or crushed batteries, and avoid charging unattended in hot places such as a car dashboard. Heat is also a common cause of overheating warnings when you put a hot battery back in the camera.
