Fine cut
Also known as: refined cut
The stage after a rough cut where every edit point is trimmed precisely, before colour, sound and titles are added on top.

What it means
A Rough cut establishes order; a fine cut establishes timing. The same clips in the same sequence, with every in and out point moved a few frames to where it belongs rather than where the first pass left it.
The work is small and decisive. A cut landing two frames late reads as hesitant, and nothing in grading or sound design repairs that. Timing is the layer everything else sits on.
It ends at picture lock. Once the fine cut is agreed the structure stops moving, which is what makes a Final cut possible to finish at all.
How it works in practice
Music is the reference. Each cut is nudged until it lands on the Beat grid, and a sequence that felt approximate becomes deliberate without a single clip changing. The material was already there.
Movement decides the frame. Cutting on action gives each join an obvious place, and the fine cut is largely the work of finding it in each one.
Watching without sound is the test. A sequence that holds up silently has its timing right, because the music is no longer covering a hesitation. Any join that stands out is one to revisit.
What to watch out for
Starting it too early wastes the work. Refining frames inside a structure that still changes means doing the same trims twice, which is why order comes first. Structure is easier to change than timing is to redo.
It is also where edits get longer. Adding a few frames to every shot for comfort pushes the Edit length up noticeably, and the result feels slower without any obvious cause.
Perfectionism has no natural stopping point. Past a certain amount of nudging the changes stop being visible to anyone, and the remaining hours belong to Editing time rather than to the edit.
How RawClip handles it
Cut points are placed against the music and the action in one pass rather than refined in a second one, so what comes back is already timed rather than approximate. Adjusting individual joins afterwards is possible in any editor and rarely necessary.
