GoPro Labs

Also known as: Labs firmware, experimental firmware

Experimental firmware from GoPro that unlocks controls and automation the standard release does not expose, at the user own risk.

Updated

What it means

Labs is an alternative firmware rather than an application. Installed on a supported body it adds controls aimed at people who want the camera to behave in ways the consumer release deliberately does not.

The additions are mostly about automation and precision: scheduled starts, scripted behaviour, QR code configuration, exposure controls and the sort of options a Pro mode user would otherwise be missing.

It is explicitly experimental. Features appear, change and disappear between versions, which makes it a tool for deliberate work rather than a general upgrade to Action camera firmware.

How it works in practice

It earns its place in unattended recording. Starting a camera at a set time, or on a trigger, is exactly what a standard release will not do and what Scheduled capture on a fixed installation requires.

QR code configuration is the practical interface. Settings are encoded in a printed code the camera reads, which is far faster than menu diving on several bodies before a session and considerably less error prone than doing it by hand.

Testing the exact behaviour before relying on it is essential, since an experimental feature that half works produces a card of unusable footage rather than an error message.

What to watch out for

It is unsupported by definition, so a problem introduced by it is not a warranty matter and the remedy is reverting rather than repair.

Features also vanish between releases, which means a workflow built on one can stop being possible after an update that cannot easily be rolled back.

Unattended recording multiplies the usual failures too. A camera that started on schedule and then hit Camera overheating produces exactly the gap nobody was present to notice, and an unattended Camera crash file is discovered only when the card is copied.

How RawClip handles it

Footage is read for what is in the files rather than for how the camera was configured, so clips from experimental firmware are analysed like any others. Unusual naming or missing telemetry is handled rather than rejected, because an experimental firmware writing something unexpected is not a reason to drop the footage.
