HiLight tag

Also known as: GoPro HiLight, highlight tag, moment tag

A marker you add to a GoPro clip while recording, by button, voice or app, to flag a moment worth finding later. It is stored in the file metadata.

What it means

A HiLight tag is a bookmark inside a video file. While the camera is recording you press a button, say a command or tap the app, and the camera saves a timestamp for that point. The clip itself does not change, but editing tools that read the tags can jump straight to the marked moments.

It solves a familiar problem: after a long ride you remember a great section but not where it sits in an hour of raw footage. Tags work like the markers an editor drops on a timeline, except you add them in the field, right when the moment happens.

How it works in practice

Riders tag right after a clean jump, a near miss or a beautiful view, since pressing during the action is often unsafe. The tag then marks a point a few seconds after the moment, and good editing tools look a little backwards from it. Some cameras also add tags automatically from motion or GPS data.

GoPro apps use tags to suggest clips for quick edits, and desktop editors that read GoPro metadata can show them as markers. Because tags live in the file metadata, re-exporting a clip from some apps strips them, so copy the original files when you want to keep them.

What to watch out for

Tags are only as good as your habits. If you tag everything, nothing stands out, and if you forget, the best moments go unmarked. Pick a simple rule, such as tagging only the moments you would want in the final video, and keep it consistent for a whole trip.

Not every tool reads them. Many general-purpose editors ignore GoPro tags entirely, and converting files to another container or codec may drop the metadata that holds them. Keep the untouched originals as your master copies, and treat tags as a convenience rather than the only record of where your best moments are.

How RawClip handles it

RawClip does not read HiLight tags. The AI analyzes the footage itself for motion, jumps, faces and peak action, so you do not need to tag anything. Upload the whole session, and it finds the moments for your highlight on its own.

Skip the editing. Keep the best moments.

Upload your raw footage and get a finished highlight in 4K and 1080p - no timeline, no editing skills.
