Voice control

Also known as: voice commands, GoPro voice control

Controlling an action camera by speaking commands such as start recording or take a photo, so you can operate it hands-free on a helmet, bike or board.

Updated

What it means

Voice control lets the camera listen for a short list of phrases and react to them. Typical commands start and stop video, take a photo, start a time-lapse, add a highlight tag or turn the camera off. Some models can even wake from sleep when they hear the right phrase.

The point is hands-free operation. When the camera sits on a helmet or the end of a pole, reaching the buttons with gloves is awkward or impossible, and a quick spoken command keeps both hands on the bars, poles or paddle.

How it works in practice

Commands work best in a firm, clear voice close to the camera, and most cameras support several languages. On a quiet chairlift or a calm lineup they are reliable. In wind, near an engine or in a loud crowd, recognition drops quickly because the microphone cannot separate your voice from the noise.

A common trick is to start recording by voice at the top of a run and stop at the bottom, which saves battery and leaves far fewer empty minutes to scroll through later. Pair it with a remote for situations where shouting is impractical, such as a quiet trail or a crowded venue.

What to watch out for

Do not trust a command you cannot confirm. Without checking the screen or listening for the beep, you may think you are recording when the camera never heard you, and the best run of the day goes unfilmed. Learn the confirmation sounds and keep them turned on.

Voice control also keeps the camera listening, which uses some battery, and it can trigger by accident when friends talk nearby. Switch it off when you do not need it, and remember that wind noise at speed makes recognition unreliable, so start recording before you drop in rather than mid-run.
